Fabricate was born from a desire to modernize quilting without losing its artistic heart. Rooted in Tradition
I grew up in a family where quilting was a sacred tradition—but it was becoming a fading one. There were quilts stitched for marriages, new babies, and milestones. Every quilt in our family collection held a story, and no one forgot whose hands had made them. But because no one in my or my mother’s generation had taken up the needle, I decided to change that.
For years, I put off making my first quilt because I didn't think I had the budget for it. Then one day, I was flipping through a book of free upholstery samples from a local shop, wondering what to do with hundreds of tiny swatches. It hit me. In the true, original spirit of quilting, I pieced together a king-sized quilt top from those scraps. I batted it with an old comforter, backed it with a bedsheet, and cut up a curtain for the binding. Was it perfect? Of course not. But it was a quilt—and it was the first new heirloom added to our family collection in decades.
That project sparked a deep love for the craft. But as I went on to plan quilts for my niece and my son, I realized there was no easy way to visualize my ideas. I found myself bookmarking dozens of fabrics and trying to preview layouts using Cricut’s Design Space, of all things, just to see if the colors worked together.
Surely, I thought, there had to be a better way.
